Highly significant historical document and firsthand memoir: "Norilsk - Baltic Katyn" written by junior Latvian military officer Roberts Gabris. Published in Riga, Latvia, during the twilight of the Soviet Union in 1990, this paperback edition serves as an authentic, harrowing record of the systematic liquidation of Baltic military leadership following the Soviet occupation. The book details the tragic events of June 1941, when approximately 500 Latvian officers were arrested at the Litene summer camp and deported to the severe labor camps of Norilsk in Siberia. Gabris was one of only 70 survivors who managed to return after a decade of hard labor. This work stands as a monument to those who perished, revealing deep historical truths hidden by Soviet censorship for nearly 70 years. • The Author (Roberts Gabris): Gabris (1903–2000) was a highly respected veteran and a recipient of Latvia’s prestigious Order of the Three Stars. He secretly began penning this manuscript in 1973 during the peak of Soviet "Great Silence" and censorship, completing it purely from memory without the help of external records. • The Publisher & Date (Liesma, 1990): Published by the state-turned-independent publishing house Apgāds Liesma in Riga right as Latvia was reclaiming its independence. Books printed during this exact transitional window (1990–1991) often had low budgets, limited paper stock, and short print runs, making surviving copies scarce. • The Original Title & Translation: Though written entirely in English by translators Evalds and Anita Lasis for international awareness, the title page notes that the manuscript was originally written by Gabris in Latvian under the title "Latvju virsnieks Nr. 35473" (Latvian Officer No. 35473).
