fascinating piece of European post-WWII history: a 1947 edition of the novel Kapri written by the celebrated Latvian author and painter Jānis Jaunsudrabiņš. This book is a landmark example of "exile literature" published immediately following the war. While the title page credits the prominent Latvian diaspora publisher Grāmatu Draugs (headed by Helmārs Rudzītis), the unique copyright/colophon page reveals its true wartime provenance: it was printed under the authorization of the EUCOM (European Command) Civil Affairs Division in Göppingen, Germany (Druck: NWZ, Göppingen) • The Displaced Persons (DP) History: Following WWII, hundreds of thousands of Baltic refugees fled Soviet occupation and lived in Western European DP camps. To keep their culture alive, intellectual communities established makeshift publishing operations. This book bears the mandatory military print clearance from the American military government (EUCOM Civil Affairs Division), making it a significant historical artifact of post-war refugee history. • The Author: Jānis Jaunsudrabiņš (1877–1962) is one of Latvia's most revered classic writers and painters. His travel to the Italian island of Capri in 1936 inspired this specific novel, which blends psychological realism with vibrant imagery. • The Publisher: Helmārs Rudzītis' Grāmatu Draugs was the premier publishing house for Latvian literature in exile. This book marks the transitional period where the publisher operated out of Germany and Denmark before eventually establishing a long-term presence in New York. • Language & Rarity: Written entirely in Latvian. Because these books were printed in limited quantities on fragile, low-grade post-war paper stock inside occupied zones, finding copies that survived in complete condition is rare Pickup category timeslot {A}
