fascinating piece of 20th-century history and Baltic literary heritage. This softcover volume features three works—"Sirdsšķīsti ļaudis" (Pure-Hearted People), "Ērģelnieks" (The Organist), and "Asaras" (Tears)—by the foundational Latvian romanticist Jānis Poruks. Published in 1947 by the exile imprint "Sauksme" in Kempten (Allgäu), Germany, this book is a rare survivor of the post-WWII Displaced Persons (DP) camp print culture. The interior page bears the official military censorship stamp: "AUTHORIZED BY EUCOM HQ, Civil Affairs Division, 21. 7. 1947". • Historical DP Camp Significance: Following World War II, hundreds of thousands of Baltic refugees fleeing Soviet occupation were housed in Displaced Persons camps across Allied-controlled Germany. Despite severe resource scarcity, these communities established complex printing operations to preserve their culture. Books authorized by the European Command Headquarters (EUCOM HQ) represent a distinct and highly collectible niche of post-war migration history. • The Author: Jānis Poruks (1871–1911) is celebrated as the founder of the romantic branch of Latvian literature. His psychological narratives focus on pure, idealistic characters dealing with existential melancholy, making his works a staple of Latvian culture. • The Publisher: The "Sauksme" publishing house operated out of the Kempten DP camp, utilizing the local German printing facility Druck: Allgäuer Heimatverlag GmbH (noted on the back cover). • Linguistic Detail: The entire text is printed in the Latvian language, serving as an artifact of cultural preservation during a time when the Latvian homeland was cut off behind the Iron Curtain. • Bonus Inclusions: This copy includes a vintage, mid-20th century book catalog slip and return envelope from the Amerikas Latviešu Apvienības Apgāds (American Latvian Association Publishing), originally located on Lakeway Avenue in Kalamazoo, Michigan. This adds fantastic provenance, charting the book's journey from a German DP camp to the Latvian diaspora community in the United States. Pickup category timeslot {A}
