An exceptional piece of mid-20th-century history and Baltic heritage, this is a 1946 hardcover edition of the classic tragedy "Indulis un Ārija" (Indulis and Ārija) by the celebrated Latvian playwright Jānis Rainis. This specific copy is a highly collectible Displaced Persons (DP) Camp publication, printed in Kempten, Allgäu, Germany immediately following World War II. Issued by the exile publisher Apgāds Selga, it features the explicit historical imprint: "Authorized by UNRRA 1946" (United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration) and was printed by Jos. Kösel. The interior contains the full five-act tragedy, the original cast/character layout (Personas), a historical introduction (Ievads), and a notable cover illustration credit to Latvian artist Leonīda Ozoliņa. It stands as a moving cultural artifact of the post-WWII Latvian exile community striving to preserve their literary identity while living in refugee camps. • Author: Jānis Rainis (1865–1929) • Title: Indulis un Ārija: Jaunības Traģēdija Piecos Cēlienos (Youth Tragedy in Five Acts) • Publisher: Apgāds Selga, Kempten (Germany), 1946 • Printer: Jos. Kösel, Graph. Anstalt, Kempten • Language: Latvian • Format: Hardcover, textured green cloth binding • The Author (Jānis Rainis): Rainis is widely considered the national poet of Latvia and one of its most monumental literary figures. Writing Indulis un Ārija originally in 1911, he used ancient Baltic history—a tragic romance between a Latvian warrior and the daughter of a German crusader—as a metaphor for Latvia's modern struggles for freedom, national identity, and independence. • The UNRRA & DP Camp Imprint: Following WWII, hundreds of thousands of Baltic refugees fled Soviet occupation and lived in Displaced Persons camps across Allied-controlled Germany. The UNRRA managed these camps and authorized small-scale printing operations. Because paper was severely rationed and resources were scarce, publishing full-length hardcovers like this was a monumental feat. It represents the "exile literature" (trimdas literatūra) movement, highly sought after by specialized history and Baltic book collectors. • Language Value: Because the book is printed entirely in Latvian for a closed community of refugees, its print run was naturally limited compared to mass-market European publications.
