An exceptional, highly collectible lot of four vintage books written entirely in Latvian, highlighting a critical era in Baltic literary history. This collection features three scarce post-WWII "Trimda" (Exile / Displaced Persons camp) editions produced by refugees in Allied-occupied Germany, alongside a rare wartime book from the legendary Zelta Ābele press. These volumes serve as vital historical artifacts of cultural preservation under extreme adversity. Detailed Inventory & Condition Notes: • 1. "Jānīts nāca par gadskārtu: Jāņu dziesmas" (1944) • Author/Compiler: Arvīds Brastiņš. • Publisher: Zelta Ābele (Rīga). • Collector Note: A late-WWII wartime collection of traditional Midsummer solstice folk songs (dainas). Features striking, complete woodblock-style illustrations by Kārlis Freimanis. Zelta Ābele is legendary among Baltic bibliophiles for pioneering high-aesthetic, premium small-format publishing in pre-war Latvia. • 2. "Vēju saucējs" (1946) • Author: Ernests Aistars (Cover/Vignettes by Viestarts Aistars). • Publisher: Printed by P. Haas & Cie. under UNRRA Team 76 (Augsburg, Germany). • Collector Note: A true DP camp printing limited strictly to 2,000 copies. Includes a beautiful, authentic contemporary ink inscription on the flyleaf dated November 1, 1946. • 3. "Draugi un gadi (mazi stāsti)" (1947) • Author: Jānis Akuraters. • Publisher: Jānis Liepiņš (Eslingena/Esslingen, Germany). • Collector Note: Published under a post-war military governance permit (Lic. EUCOM CIV. AFFAIRS DIVIS.) in the famous Esslingen refugee camp. Features a portrait sketch of Akuraters, one of Latvia's most celebrated early 20th-century romantic poets and writers. • 4. "Paaudžu pils" (1947) • Author: Mintauts Eglītis. • Publisher: Arvīds Sēļzemnieks / Printed by Adolf Flügge (Geesthacht, Germany, 1948). • Collector Note: Explicitly designated as a Trimda (Exile) release with a restricted run of 2,000 copies. Cover art credited to the known artist Ernests Ābele. Language & Rarity Note: All volumes are printed in the Latvian language. Because DP camp publications were printed on fragile, post-war paper in very limited quantities for a displaced population, few copies have survived intact into the 21st century. This bundle offers an instant collection for academic libraries, diaspora archives, or specialized Baltic history collectors. Jānīts nāca par gadskārtu: Jāņu dziesmas (1944) • What it is about: This is a curated collection of traditional Latvian dainas (folk songs) dedicated entirely to Jāņi, the ancient Midsummer solstice celebration which is Latvia’s most important cultural holiday. • Thematic Core: Compiled by Arvīds Brastiņš—who was heavily involved in the Dievturība movement (the revival of ancient Latvian folk religion)—the book arranges these songs into thematic sections. It covers seasonal folklore, the brewing of beer, the making of cheese, lighting solstice bonfires, and singing until dawn. It acts as a preservation piece for indigenous Latvian traditions, meant to bring comfort and cultural continuity during the dark final years of World War II. 2. Vēju saucējs (1946) • What it is about: Vēju saucējs ("The Wind Caller") is a psychological and social novel by Ernests Aistars, an author who became a prominent voice in exile literature. • Thematic Core: Written and published right as the refugee crisis unfolded in Europe, the book explores themes of personal transformation, displacement, and human resilience. Aistars’ work frequently deals with characters caught between the rural, traditional Latvian soul and the chaotic pressures of modern European conflicts. The title itself serves as a metaphor for individuals trying to navigate or "call upon" the turbulent winds of fate and history that blew them away from their homeland. 3. Draugi un gadi (1947) • What it is about: This is a collection of short stories (mazi stāsti) by Jānis Akuraters, one of Latvia's most revered neo-romantic writers who had passed away before the war (in 1937). • Thematic Core: The stories in Draugi un gadi ("Friends and Years") focus on nostalgia, youth, changing friendships, and the passage of time. Akuraters was a master at blending vivid nature descriptions with deep emotional reflection. For Latvian refugees living in the Displaced Persons camps in 1947, reading these lyrical stories about their lost pre-war homeland and old companions offered deeply poignant emotional relief and a profound sense of shared cultural identity. 4. Paaudžu pils (1947) • What it is about: Paaudžu pils ("The Palace of Generations") is a dramatic historical novel or family saga written by Mintauts Eglītis. • Thematic Core: The book explores the concept of ancestral roots, examining how the legacy, values, and hardships of past generations shape the identity of the current one. The "palace" or "castle" is a symbolic representation of the Latvian nation and family lineage—built over centuries by the sweat and blood of ancestors, destroyed by wars, but surviving in the hearts of those forced into exile. It was written precisely to remind displaced Latvians of their generational endurance. Pickup category timeslot {A}
