Jim Yelton Squamish Nation - Killer Whale Talking Stick 2010 Olympic Games • Jim, now age 71, was born on July 9, 1955, in Squamish, British Columbia. He has carved for more than 50 years, and is known internationally for his deep, expressive formline carving and fine attention to cultural detail. • At 12, Jim was mentored by his father Michael Yelton, a revered traditional carver who taught the techniques, but also the story, spiritual and cultural importance behind Northwest Coast First Nations images. • This piece is not signed in the traditional sense with a name, but rather in form style. The "U" at the back od the whale's tail is Jim's mark. • Originally there would have been an official certificate, but this has been lost at some point. • For the Squamish Nation, the Killer Whale (Orca) is a symbol of great strength, bravery, family, and unity. • There is no record of how many of these were ordered or made, but each is slightly different for the other, because they are hand carved individually. • In excellent condition, no breaks, cracks or chips.
