Vintage MCM Australian pottery dish - "Cula Series" • During the 1950's and 1960's, Ronald Curnow & William Langley combined the first letters of their last names, CUrnow and LAngley, to create the brand name "Cula" in Sydney, New South Wales. • This was time of "white power over" the First Peoples of Australia. The workers in this pottery studio were "white" settlers, so this is very much an historical "cultural appropriation" example. • The shallow bowl is a mold, and an iron black oxide was applied, and then an design was formed via a sgraffito technique, so each is slightly different form another, so unique. • The back is listed as "D3", which is suppose to be "Aboriginal Person Carving a Tree", but there must have been some mixup and the image "Aboriginal Warrior in Seated Pose" • There are two holes on the back, so the bowl can be hung on the wall. • In excellent condition, no breaks, cracks, or chips.
