Offered for auction is a beautiful early 20th-century (circa 1900–1920) Edwardian barrel-back captain’s chair, commonly referred to as a smoker's bow or office armchair. Constructed from solid, heavy quarter-sawn white oak, the chair exhibits a gorgeous tiger-stripe grain pattern characteristic of high-quality period craftsmanship. It features an iconic wrap-around horseshoe armrest supported by finely turned spindles and dramatic, scrolled side supports. The seat boasts its highly sought-after, original circular inset panel featuring an intricate, deep-embossed Art Nouveau floral and scrollwork motif, historically pinned in place with a perimeter of decorative iron tacks. The chair stands firmly on elegant, gently splayed cabriole-style front legs. Condition: Structurally rock-solid with no loose joins. The wood retains a deep, warm honey-amber patina with minor, honest age-related wear, including a shallow chip on the front-right lip of the seat frame that does not affect structural integrity. The original embossed seat insert is intact and showcases a stunning relief design, with one notable historical puncture/tear near the upper-left section of the motif (visible in close-up photos). An exceptional restoration candidate or a perfect rustic statement piece. Piece from hole is still attached like a hanging chad. The Embossed Fiber/Leather Seat: Antique chairs of this style often featured compressed fiberboard (sometimes called "Harwood seats") or heavy leather panels embossed using massive hydraulic steam presses. These decorated insert panels were a hallmark of late-Victorian and Edwardian utility furniture, designed to mimic expensive hand-carved leather. Finding one with the original insert—even with minor tearing—adds massive character and historical value over a modern vinyl replacement. Pickup category timeslot {A}
