Audubon / Havell / Loates Master Editions - Original Graphics 10 image collection created from the Birds of America original Audubon/ Havell engravings with one of a kind graphic painting.

“Flamingo"

Numbered 409 of 695

This series is made up of 10 images and when purchased together would have been presented in the black folder that is sold as a separate lot. All 10 images are in this auction, buy one or collect them all!

In the late 80’s and early 1990’s, Loates tackled his most challenging and creative project to date. The John James Audubon Master Edition series of prints are among the finest made prints in the world and in 1993 Bernard was awarded for his unparalleled achievement with the prestigious Gutenberg Award of Excellence.

Master lithographer M. Bernard Loates created these very limited edition prints of Audubon images in 1992. The goal was to recreate these pieces as Audubon would have wanted them done – all would be identical with true consistent coloring. Working from original Havell/Audubon engravings, Loates and his crew of printing and colorist master craftsmen began by stripping the images back to the original 1820’s black line engravings. Bird skins were borrowed from museums so that the colorists could accurately match the original bird colors. The colorists hand-mixed German “Light Fast” inks to match the actual live plumage of the birds depicted. Colours were added one at a time, maximum 1 color per working day, using hand-cut overlays. No image had fewer than 32 passes through the single-color press. It took up to 6 months to complete the images and nearly 70% of the stock was wasted in production testing and aligning. The extremely fine 400 line screens produce a photograph-like continuous tone image even under magnification.

“Sand lake Algoma” by Lawren Harris

These pieces are created using a specialized process where a cast is made from the original painting, allowing the reproduction to capture the exact texture, brushstrokes, and imperfections of the original.

This work of art is an exclusive master, edition, lithograph, printed on neutral PH Phoenix imperial, fine, art paper, employing the unique Phoenix process. The lithograph is mounted on an African hardwood panel, before being pressed into a mold simulating the feel of an original oil painting. This is number 311 of 460 ever made.

These recreations require as many as 40 hand mixed colors, which are laid down one at a time. This labour intensive procedure is further enhanced for the use of special light fast ink. Following the principles of applying light tone values first, then gradually building up the darker tones, the craftsman are able to capture, on a single colour rotary press, the subtle chromatic details of the original.

The Phoenix process was developed in Ontario by M.Bernard Loates, a man with 25 years of experience, five consecutive printing awards and a well-known genius for the archival reiteration and printing of graphic images. To describe his results as successful is not to give him due credit. They are breathtaking. Those few people who have been privileged to compare Mr. Loates recreation panels with the original works, have been moved by more than simple admiration. The astonishing fact is that Bernard himself cannot tell the difference it is literally necessary to examine the backs of the panels in order to distinguish the originals. Pictorially, the originals and their recreated panels are identical in every detail. Every brushstroke, every patch of unpainted surface, is duplicated with perfection.

These reproductions are noted for being highly detailed, often described as having "perfect fidelity" to the original paintings.

Unframed, catalog shown for information but not included. Packaged. Some wear on edges of wood on the back. This is a brand new item I removed packaging for photos

Clarence Gagnon (1881–1942) was one of Canada's most celebrated early landscape artists, renowned for his beautiful depictions of rural Quebec. Born in Montreal, he studied art in Canada before travelling to Paris, where he was influenced by European artistic movements and Impressionism. Gagnon became particularly well known for capturing the picturesque villages, countryside and changing seasons of the Charlevoix region. His distinctive use of colour, delicate light and atmospheric detail helped establish him as an important figure in Canadian art. His works remain highly regarded and are represented in major public and private collections.

Limited edition print numbered 8 of 875

Beautiful hand signed print by artist Norman Knott “Family Peace”

Norman Knott (1945–2003), also known by the name White Bear, was a highly respected Anishinaabe/Ojibwe artist from Curve Lake First Nation, just north of Peterborough, Ontario. A self-taught artist, Knott developed a distinctive style that brought together the naturalistic observation of wildlife with the symbolism and spiritual traditions of his Ojibwe heritage. His deep connection to the land and the natural world became a defining element of his work, particularly in his portrayals of animals and birds.

Norman Knott’s influence also extended beyond his own paintings. He was generous in sharing his knowledge of Anishinaabe artistic traditions with other artists, including members of his own community. His work inspired younger Indigenous artists and helped bring greater recognition to First Nations art from the Curve Lake area. Today, his paintings remain an important part of the artistic heritage of the Kawarthas and continue to be appreciated for their combination of natural beauty, wildlife and Anishinaabe symbolism.

Danny Dennis (1951–2012) was a talented self-taught Gitxsan First Nations artist from British Columbia, with Tsimshian heritage. Born in Port Essington and raised primarily in the Hazelton area, Dennis began his professional artistic career in 1978. He became recognized for his distinctive interpretations of traditional Northwest Coast Indigenous art, working in a variety of mediums including painting, printmaking, carving and jewellery. Inspired by renowned artists Robert Davidson and Francis Williams, Dennis developed a style characterized by flowing lines, striking forms and powerful imagery. His work was exhibited in galleries throughout Canada and internationally, including Germany.

These two striking works by Gitxsan artist Danny Dennis beautifully showcase his distinctive interpretation of Northwest Coast Indigenous art. Using traditional formline elements, flowing shapes and carefully balanced compositions, Dennis brings cultural imagery to life through a sophisticated palette of black, terracotta red, teal and white. His designs are both bold and graceful, demonstrating a wonderful sense of movement, symmetry and visual storytelling.

Frogs and Bear celebrate the natural world through two significant animal forms found in Northwest Coast artistic traditions. The intricate details, expressive shapes and contrasting colours give each composition its own personality while creating a lovely visual relationship between the two pieces. Together, they make a particularly appealing pair for collectors of Canadian Indigenous art and admirers of contemporary Northwest Coast design.

Framed Group of Seven Hand Signed lithograph by A.J. Casson “Village in Winter” 30 x 36" with COA

This is a hand signed print of "The Air, The Forst and the Watch by Robert Bateman. It is a limited edition print numbered 15,718 of 42,558. It is presented in a beautiful folder on it's own and has never been owned privately!

Robert Bateman is one of Canada’s most distinguished and collectible wildlife artists, renowned for his extraordinary realism, meticulous observation and ability to capture not only the appearance of wildlife, but its spirit and place within the natural world. Often described as one of Canada’s foremost interpreters of nature, Bateman’s paintings invite the viewer to slow down and truly observe the landscape. His work is particularly admired for its quiet sophistication, beautifully balanced compositions and thoughtful environmental themes, making his art highly sought after by collectors of Canadian and wildlife art.

The Air, the Forest and the Watch, created in 1989 to commemorate Earth Day, is a particularly significant and contemplative work. A magnificent bald eagle stands watch from an aged forest tree, its commanding presence contrasted beautifully against the surrounding wilderness. The eagle represents “the watch”—a powerful symbol of awareness and our responsibility to protect the natural world. Bateman’s inclusion of the weathered tree is equally meaningful, reflecting his understanding that even fallen and decaying trees play an essential role in a healthy forest. More than a beautiful wildlife image, this work combines exceptional artistry with a lasting message of conservation and stewardship. With its striking subject, sophisticated composition and deeper symbolism, The Air, the Forest and the Watch is an impressive addition to a discerning collection and a wonderful representation of Robert Bateman’s enduring contribution to Canadian wildlife art.

Audubon / Havell / Loates Master Editions - Original Graphics 10 image collection created from the Birds of America original Audubon/ Havell engravings with one of a kind Graphic Painting.

“Great Blue Heron"

Numbered 631 of 750

Colors were added one at a time, maximum 1 color per working day, using hand-cut overlays. No image had fewer than 32 passes through the single-color press. It took up to 6 months to complete the images and nearly 70% of the stock was wasted in production testing and aligning. The extremely fine 400 line screens produce a photograph-like continuous tone image even under magnification.

Raven and First Man is a striking representation of Northwest Coast Indigenous art, featuring the iconic Raven alongside a human figure. Dennis uses the traditional formline design vocabulary, incorporating bold flowing shapes, intricate contours and the dramatic contrast of black, red and white. The composition brings together powerful symbolic imagery and remarkable visual movement, drawing the viewer into a story rooted in Indigenous cultural traditions and mythology. Raven holds an important place in many Northwest Coast traditions, often associated with creation, transformation and the relationship between the natural and spiritual worlds. This captivating piece is a wonderful example of Danny Dennis's distinctive artistic style and would make a meaningful addition to a collection of Canadian Indigenous art

“North Shore Lake Superior” by Lawren Harris

These pieces are created using a specialized process where a cast is made from the original painting, allowing the reproduction to capture the exact texture, brushstrokes, and imperfections of the original.

This work of art is an exclusive master, edition, lithograph, printed on neutral PH Phoenix imperial, fine, art paper, employing the unique Phoenix process. The lithograph is mounted on an African hardwood panel, before being pressed into a mold simulating the feel of an original oil painting. This is number 350 of 460 ever made.
