Lot #29: Vintage Underwood 18 Ultraportable Manual Typewriter - 1960s Mid-Century Italian Design

stunning Vintage Underwood 18 ultraportable manual typewriter from the 1960s. Exceptionally sleek, lightweight, and compact, this machine represents the high-water mark of mid-century industrial design, combining American brand lineage with precision European engineering. This model features a crisp cream/off-white body with contrasting dark gray keys and a standard QWERTY layout. Ideal for writers on the go, it comes nestled in its original, distinctive soft-sided zippered companion case with a built-in document sleeve. • Brand History: The Underwood Typewriter Company, famously founded in New York in 1895, defined early American typing history and was favored by legendary authors like Ernest Hemingway and F. Scott Fitzgerald. By the early 1960s, Underwood merged with the iconic Italian manufacturer Olivetti. The Underwood 18 was built in Europe (originally engineered by Antares in Italy) under this joint era, giving it a unique cross-Atlantic collector status that bridges classic American typography and minimalist European design. • Ultraportable Profile: Highly coveted "flat" style profile that slips into a backpack or small bag much more easily than bulky desktop alternatives. • All-Metal Engineering: Unlike plastic portables of the 1970s and 80s, this era features robust, high-quality mechanical components. • Original Matching Case: Finding these units with their fragile vinyl zipper cases completely intact adds significant value. Untested worth noting that the classic Underwood lineage was the ultimate choice for iconic American authors including Ernest Hemingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Jack Kerouac, and William Faulkner.
