This mid 1800s Boston Rock is a wonderful example of timeless American furniture.   The chair was refinished, painted red and embellished with a hand painted gold piping and cornucopia design by a local Long Island antique restorer in July 1971 (Drinkwater).

At the back of the chair are seven turned spindles topped with a broad curved rail.

The hallmark of a Boston Rocker is the wide pine "scroll" seat which consists of three parts: a rise at the rear to accommodate the body shape, a wide center piece, and a forward curve called a "cyma" at the front.

The hand-turned legs are sturdily crafted but retain a simple grace.

While the Boston rocking chair was reputedly invented by Benjamin Franklin, it was most likely originated in the 1840s and became popular during the mid-19th century.

While its Boston origins are undeniable, it was often copied by craftsmen up and down the East Coast and far into Pennsylvania.   Prized because they were so comfortable, these chairs were always among the pieces moved from house to house as families grew and migrated.

The Boston Rockers were so in demand that they became a commodity eagerly carried by merchant ships as they sailed around the world.  As a result, today they can be found as far afield as South Africa and China a tribute to their great design.

The painted surface is in good repair - save the crack on the seat. However, the chair is sturdy and fully functional.
