Trunks were used primarily for traveling and transporting possessions from point A to point B while chests are typically considered fixed or permanent pieces of furniture for storing things like blankets and assorted bedding or more valuable items. Therefore, historically, trunks were more practical and functional while chests were more decorative.
The wide use of trunks gained momentum in the Victorian Era (starting in the 1870s) when long-distance rail and water travel became easier.
This flat-topped, wooden steamer trunk dates from the 1920s. The flat top allowed it to be easily stacked and stored on trains, ships and carriages.
This trunk is made of a mix of materials including wood, leather, and metal detailing and hardware. The hardware on the front consists of a three latch design with built in lid lifts, front lid guides, and a (non-functioning) lock and keyhole in the center. The sides of the trunk contain metal where handles were attached but the leather handles have worn away with age.
The top of the trunk contains slats of wood that are secured in place with metal. The top, sides and bottom also contain metal bumpers The corners of the trunk have metal edged trim.
The interior of the trunk is open. There are no internal compartments or trays. The interior is covered in decorative paper.
The trunk is sturdy and offers a huge amount of storage space. It currently holds 2 woolen blankets and theres ample room for many more items.
The trunk could make an interesting coffee table (and conversation starter), accent storage piece, or a TV stand (by simply placing a piece of glass on its top to make the surface flat). Used in a living environment, it could be called a piece of functional art.
The bottom of the trunk contains small prods that act as legs so that it remains level and doesnt scratch the floor surface.
