While people have used oil lamps since the dawn of time, oil - as a fuel - was replaced by Kerosene in the US during the mid 1800s. Those kerosene lamps typically had flat wicks, tubular wicks, or mantles. Although electricity was invented by the combined efforts of Edison and Tesla in 1876, most homes didnt have electricity until 1925. Therefore, many rural homes relied on kerosene lamps through the 1930s and 1940s. Nowadays oil/kerosene lamps are used more as a novelty and/or collected for their aesthetic and design appeal.
This kerosene lamp was acquired in Maine in 1971 and may date from the 1940s.
It has a brass base, a hurricane, glass chimney and a white (milk) glass dome.
The base contains (1) the collar on top that supports the milk glass dome with three brass arms, (2) the oil font (e.g., the reservoir to hold the kerosene), and (3) a small neck that supports the broad, pedestal bottom. The kerosene font contains a pull plug so that the user can pour oil into the lamp. The lamp also contains a side knob that allows the user to raise / control the size of the flame by lengthening or shortening the flat cotton wick.
The lamp does not contain any fuel. In terms of functionality, it is untested - although the cotton flat wick is visible (see photo)
