Historically significant document defining the face of Meiji Japan during the crisis of 1873. Note very rare depiction of Korea in close proximity to Japan. Period also marked the Land Tax Reform in Japan, significant both for allowing private ownership of land and for signaling the beginning of a western style capitalism based on the British model. Map approximately 22 x 14 inches. Stamped and signed with date by Martin Dohmen, Vice-Consulate of Britain in Yedo, Japan, 1873 and issued to Mrs. F. Patterson. Map is hand coloured, hand drawn on very fine Washi (rice) paper and in addition to the detailed drawing and precise calligraphy, is accompanied by a letter stamped by the Emperor. Note: one corner torn away (see photo)
