A collection of miscellaneous volumes, united by their age. There's something in here to interest everyone:
"The City of Masks," 1918, by George McCutcheon, has gilt and dark green stamped cover on cloth boards, and full color endpapers. McCutcheon wrote novels, plays, and screenplays, and is best remembered today for "Brewster's Millions," of which at least 7 films have been made ... so far.
A 1901 edition of "A Journey to Nature," by J.P. Mowbray (pen name for Andrew Wheeler), a reporter for the New York Times beginning in 1857. This copy has gilt and black decorated title on cloth boards, black and white illustrated endpapers, and beautiful black and white illustrations at the beginning and end of each chapter. Wheeler originally published these essays-- blending memoir, travel, and nature--in the Evening Post. In addition, he wrote plays, novels, and reported for various papers, some under the fabulous pen name of Nym Crinkle. For more on this multifaceted writer, see: https://pfaffs.web.lehigh.edu/node/54285
"True to the Old Flag," by British author G.A. Henty, is undated but was originally published in 1885, and tells the story of the War for Independence, from the British perspective. This copy has green and black stamped cover with gilt to the spine, on cloth boards, foxing around page edges, and beginning separation from spine at front. Henty was yet another prolific author of the late 1800s (amazing what people got done before Netflix), with over 100 children's books to his credit.
We love the marvelously illustrated "Cleanliness and Health," published in 1932 as part of a series of health education books for the Malden schools. Very good condition.
Another tool for self-improvement can be found in "When You Write A Letter," by Thomas Arkle Clark, from 1921. His slightly peevish dedication says it all: To my former students and all others who have not answered my letters. See his 1932 obit in the University of Illinois student paper, for a look at a long and varied career:
"American Government" from 1904 looks at the various powers and duties of local, state, and federal government, with a full color map of the US and black and white photo illustrations throughout.
Finally, "The Point of View," 1913 and possible first edition, by Elinor Glyn. In dustjacket. Gilt-impressed front board and spine on blue cloth covers, with dust jacket, some pencilled names on jacket. In good condition. British novelist Glyn wrote romance novels, first as a means of supporting her wayward husband. Her affairs with titled members of the aristocracy provided inspiration for her books; she also worked as a war correspondent during WWI, and  was present a the signing of the Treaty of Versailles. She moved to America and became an in-demand screenwriter, also directing and producing several films. "A Point of View" was considered somewhat racy at the time for its scenes of "love-making." Take note!
