The side notches lock it into the new height. A very clever design that was used in the late 1700s to early 1800s, that allowed a reader to adjust the candle to the best height for reading. Made of hand turned tiger stripe Oak. All wood except for the baseplate screw. This piece is old, but we dont think it is 220 years old. Instead, we believe it was handmade in the 1920s, during the 150 anniversary of 1776. Raises from approximately 2 feet to 3 feet. In very good condition. There is a small chip off of the collar that holder it in place. See the pictures. Measurements: 24-36 inches
