William Gardner Blackwood was born on 26 March 1892 at Holly Bank, Kilcreggan, Dunbarton, Scotland . He fought as a soldier in the First World War along with his older brother, James. He served with the Canadian Overseas Regimental Force in 1915. In 1918, he was a soldier at the 4th Canadian General Hospital, in Basingstoke. He emigrated to Canada, and arrived at Quebec 4th Sep 1927  shortly after the first appearance of the Group of Seven's art in the 1920's He was a SIMPSON'S artist prevalent from the 1930's to the 1960's, the department store enlisting the works of listed and well known Canadian painters and selling them through their department stores. His works have always been well received . He is a listed Canadian artist and is represented with the Art Gallery of Ontario - Edward P. Taylor Research Library and Archives and the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts
