An imperforate (Imperf) proof pair of the rare 5 cent Black Caribou Newfoundland Canada postage stamps. This is about a one-of-a-kind pair that is black and imperforate and proof. From the collection of a chairman of Perkins, Bacon & Co., the firm most notable for printing the Penny Black, the world's first adhesive postage stamps, in 1840. Perhaps this pair of Black Caribou stamps was a departing gift and printed by Waterlow and Sons, the English engraver of currency, postage stamps, stocks, and bond certificates based in England.

The stamps are printed on postage stock paper, thus a proof from an end-of-run postage paper. Very odd and without a good explanation. This is the only variety on Stanley Gibbons. They sold a pair at $125.00 but then I suspect they only had one pair and also were not able to assess its meaning, and it does have significance. After all it is the only such black variety known to be printed on paper of issue.

Kasimir Bileski Notes:
Black Caribou Imperf pair. This is the Die 1 but it is not a regulation proof. It is printed on the actual watermarked paper of issue, gum and all. Only the color is BLACK and there are no perfs.

Why, is a mystery. It is the only such variety known in black, unless original color was black like the 14 value. It seems the Chairman of Perkins Bacon got the only known sheet and there is speculation this could have been the final sheet ever printed, in printing Newfoundland stamps!

The printing by this time was done by Waterlow.

And why black? Well, it could have been a salute by Waterlow to Perkins Bacon. After all they printed the world's first stamp and it was black.
