A scarce stamp set with this error: perforations on the sheet cut into these stamps. This escaped mutilation which was the fate of the imperferates by the printer and were hole punched. This was found in the collection of the former Chairman of the printer, who apparently had received some before their mutilation.

Kasimir Bileski Notes:
NEWFOUNDLAND #269
The Elizabethan stamp part perforate

I've saved this variety for the last as it certainly is the most important. When the Perkins Bacon plant was destroyed in May 1941 by German bombs, Waterlow and Sons took over the plates which did survive and kept on printing Newfoundland stamps. They used their own paper stocks and perf machines and that is why #253-266, 269, 270 differ from anything printed by Perkins Bacon.

The Chairman of Perkins Bacon did get from Waterlow sample lots of their printing. This includes trial colors in sheets, a few imperfs plus this #269 part perforate which must have been given to him long afterwards as an afterthought. It was a double sheet with 2 panes of 100 stamps perforated only horizontally. This big sheet was folded and refolded in quarters which didn't help the stamps any.

Otherwise the full set of 2253, etc., does not exist complete imperf. It does so only in a mutilated form. Robson Lowe, the English dealer purchased the Waterlow and Sons Archives when that firm in its turn ceased to print stamps. In those archives were all #253, etc., including #270 in imperforate sheets, one from every plate used. But every stamp on every sheet was punched with 4 or 5 holes and quite often in addition a large hole in the centre of each block of 4. There were no intact sheets it seems; the only ones that escaped such mutilation were the ones the Chairman of Perkins Bacon received. This includes the part perforate #269.
