The rare imperforated paired proof is rare of the 195 seal stamp.

According to Bileski only 50 pairs existed. The rarer stamp is the trail print of the 262#. The goal was to make it the same color as the previous #195 but none of the war inks would cooperate and you can see that with the lack of fineness in this stamp.

The trail sheets were killed but the printers left 1 sheet and this is the one of those hundred stamps. Note how sloppy the word poster is on that stamp as it is all puffy. Post these trials they changed the color of the stamp.

NEWFOUNDLAND #262.

The Harp seal Pup.

The famous unique topical design of the seal pup around which swirl yearly ever rising world condernation of the seal hunters, who, for a few yearly dollars, club to death tens of thousands of these attractive animals.

In printing #262 the old plate that produced #195 was reactivated but the same ink that printed #195 was no longer available. This was the World War II period. A trial printing using one type of ink was made but it turned out to be very unsatisfactory. It did not flow smoothly filling in and thickening the fine lines of the original design. A free flow- ing type of ink was tried and it turned out to be satisfactory even if the color did not match the original issue of #195. Thus the pale rose violet #262 appeared.

As for the small trial color printing, all the sheets were evidently destroyed except for one sheet of 100 stamps. This was put away into the Perkins Bacon Archives. Its color is totally un- like the issued #195 or #262. Note the effect of the ink on the word 'Postage'. Compare with the enclosed normal #262.

A most rare plate proof in black of #195 also enclosed. Unknown for over 45 years, it is a great rarity as only 50 pairs exist.
