Lot #42: Vintage Lladro-Rosal Porcelain Figurine

This lady has no Lladro back mark. There are imprinted signs and numbers in the base that exactly match those used by Lladro. And the edge of her skirt is press marked Made in Spain. Please look at the detailed photo of her face: surely this is Lladro?I therefore turn to the opinion of Peggy Rose Whiteneck who has written a number of books about Lladro. (If you are in to Lladro, please check her out on the web: she is most informative). She speaks of any number of relatively high quality figurines that are too well made to be the products of one of the small Valencian porcelain makers working "in the style of Lladro". These, she believes, are the products of sculptors in training, or perhaps experienced sculptors working on development pieces which, although not deemed ready to accept the famous cobalt mark, are of too good quality to be destroyed. Surely the Lladro Factory Shop would be the principle point of sale for such figurines.I have recently had information from an informed reader of this site who has identified this piece as Rosal-Lladro. Rosal was set up by Lladro to counteract certain competition. It was a separate company, never intended to last for long, but actually became the seed from which the Lladro Nao range developed. Rosal was identified by a sticker: having seen a photo of one, I can now recall it on the base of this lady, albeit it is now lost.So being Rosal would explain why this lady's face is so typically Lladro; why the the lines of the sculpture and the clothes and hair are also typical of Lladro style: because she is an early precursor of Nao.
