Leather bound book with raised dentiles - 1678 Edward Sparke Scintilla Anglican BIBLE ART Illustrated Cromwell England Edward Sparke was a 17th-century English minister known for his many published sermons and devotionals, though, his most famous work was his 1652 treatise, Scintilla Altaris . This work was a collection of disquisitions (consisting of poems, meditations, and essays) on the feasts of the Anglican liturgical calendar. He also included numerous prayers and hymns for reach feast as well portraits depicting many of the honored saints. Interestingly, Sparke had himself a bit of fun titling this work scintilla is the Latin word for spark. Both volumes feature brown leather covers with a decorative embossed Upper Canada College crest in gold on the front. The leather shows a mottled pattern typical of aged leather bindings. Volume 1 has a loose cover and some wear indicative of its age, while Volume 2 remains in better condition with the spine and cover intact. The spines have decorative embossing and title labels in red leather with gold text.
