#1 Histoire de Mr. Vieux Bois by Rodolphe Topffer, Publisher: Paris, Imp. F. Dufrnoy 1922, 11 x 7.75 inch, bound, 92 pages of illustrations, Original linen tape with a three-sided gold cut, endpapers and contreplats of original blue paper, all edges gilded. Rodolphe Tpffer 1799-1846 was a Swiss teacher, author, painter, cartoonist, and caricaturist. He is best known for his illustrated books (littrature en estampes, "graphic literature"), which are possibly the earliest European comics. He is known as the father of comic strips and has been credited as the "first comics artist in history."; #2 Histoire de Monsieur Cryptogame first published in 1845. Imprimerie Lev Garnier c. 1870, 11 x 7.75 inch, 64 pages of illustrations. The unique collaboration between the two inventors of comic books. Publisher's illustrated cloth in full red glazed calico, spine decorated at the top and bottom with gilt fillets and motifs with a gilt title, boards framed with black fillets and arabesques, the first with a large golden illustration in the centre. The story of a lepidopterist who goes to great lengths to replace his current lover with a more suitable one.
