The municipality of Hazelton is located along the Skeena River, within Gitxsan traditional territory. This territory covers approximately 33,000 square kilometers of northwest British Columbia, a region that is home to many of British Columbias First Nations communities.Throughout a career that spans more than 40 years, Robert has proven to be an exceptionally skilled storyteller. He has applied these skills across a diverse set of mediums, including carving, painting, dance, journalism, and writing. Of late, the paintings that he produces are a combination of traditional and contemporary First Nations styles, painted with acrylics on acid-free paper.His work has earned him a place among Canadas most highly acclaimed artists in traditional First Nations styles, and can be found in the collections of governments, celebrities, and Indigenous art connoisseurs across the globe. He first learned to carve by watching his grandparents and his aunt. At the age of twelve he was sent to residential school in Iqaluit, where the Inuit language, Inuktitut, and traditional beliefs were restricted. This had a profound impact on Akpaliapik, who rebelled by leaving school at age sixteen. He married a young woman named Noodloo and moved back to Arctic Bay.After the tragic death of his wife and their two children in a house fire in 1980, Akpaliapik moved to Montreal. He began sculpting again, learning how to use new tools and media and how to create intricate detailing. Presently, Akpaliapik resides and has a studio in Toronto.Akpaliapik has always been interested in learning more about Inuit culture in order to preserve for young Inuit it through his sculpture. He received a Canada Council grant in 1989, to travel back to Arctic Bay to learn drum dancing and kayak making, and to research and collect stories told by elders. Akpaliapik has also invested much of his time giving carving workshops in the North and in the South. He explains: "Everything that I'm doing is trying to capture some of the culture, about my traditions, simple things like hunting, wearing traditional clothing, harpoons, using legends. He comes from a family of internationally acclaimed artists, including father Henry Hunt and grandfather Mungo Martin. Richard began carving with his father at the age of thirteen. The father-son duo would go on to carve together at the Royal British Columbia Museum from 1973 until 1974, at which point Richard assumed the duties of chief carver in the museums Thunderbird Park Carving Program. He would hold this position until 1986, at which point he resigned to start anew as a freelance artist. In 1991, Richard became the first Indigenous artist to receive the Order of British Columbia, "in recognition of serving with the greatest distinction and excellence in a field of endeavour benefiting the people of the Province of British Columbia and elsewhere." In 1994, he receieved the Order of Canada. He has since received numerous other accolades, including an honorary doctorate from the University of Victoria and membership to the Royal Academy of the Arts. Richard Hunt's traditional name is highly appropriate, considering his accomplishments: Gwe-la-yo-gwe-la-gya-lis means "a man that travels and wherever he goes, he potlatches."
