Antique Large Giclee 21x27 by Eduard Von GrutznerEduard von Grtzner was a German painter best known for his genre scenes of the theater and of monks consuming beer in rowdy groups. Among his best-known works are his vivid portrayals of William Shakespeares character Falstaff from his play Henry V. Von Grtzners works are detailed in their rendering, portraying both a sense of humor and sentiment similar to his contemporary Carl Spitzweig. Born on May 26, 1846 in Gro-Karlowitz, Prussia (now Poland), he went on to attend the private painting academy of Herman Dyck in Munich and transferred to the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich shortly thereafter, where he studied under Karl Theodor von Piloty. Von Grtzner went on to have great success in Munich and was knighted in 1916. Today, his works are in the collections of the Milwaukee Art Museum and the Neue Pinakothek in Munich, among others. In 1876 Baron Ichizaemon Morimura IV formed a trading company called Morimura Kumi (Morimura Brothers) with offices in Tokyo, and a retail and wholesale office in New York for the export of traditional Japanese products such as chinaware, curios, paper lanterns and other gift items. Ichizaemon Morimura VI was a visionary and a supporter of the modernization of Japan. One thing he clearly saw was the business potential if the quality of Japanese art and skilled craft could be adapted to the North American tastes.
