Lot #19: "Dreaming of Immortality in a Thatched Cottage" Collagraph

Ethereal allegorical print of a man dreaming in his mountain hut, while his immortal self--his soul?--floats above it all. From the original ink and colored pigment hand scroll, by T'ang Yin, 1470-1524. T'ang Yin was a poet, calligrapher, and painter in the Ming dynasty, and considered one of the foremost members of the Wu School. The Wu School was a collective of artists, whose philosophy was largely self-taught rather than academic. The scroll was based on a dream his friend Wang Dongyuan had, and after which he named his garden. It was common for the owners of gardens to both name them and then take that name as a sobriquet for themselves--so this painting represents both the garden and the owner, as well as his dream. The original resides at the Smithsonian Institution.
