A wonderfulvintage L.S. Starrett Company Number 170 dial micrometer in the original fitted case ! The instrument measures approximately 2-3/4" long x 3/8" wide with a 1-/8" diameter dial and center base. It appears to be cast, machine finished and nickel plated. The top center portion of the dial reads "Starrett" in bold red letters with .001" below that in black. Below center reads "T HE L.S. STARRETT CO. ATHOL, MASS, U.S.A. MADE IN U.S.A.." The black chipboard case measures approximately 3-3/4" wide x 2-1/2" dee p x 2-3/8" high, is original to the piece and has the manufactures name embossed on the lid. French fitted with velvet lining, the brass slide latch and hinges show honest patina and work as designed. As evident from the images, it shows little to no signs of wear, nor any sign of damage or abuse. From our research, this was one of only one thousand produced around the turn of the century. This should be a terrific addition to any precision tool collectionis a vintage Dietzgen National Drawing Instruments set, likely from the Frederick Post Company,a distributor of engineering and drafting supplies founded in Chicago in the late 1890s.Here's some helpful information:Purpose:It's a set of drafting tools, primarily compasses, used for precise drawing and measurement in technical fields like engineering and architecture.Manufacturer:While the case bears the name "The Frederick Post Company," Post often rebranded tools made by other manufacturers.Age:Given the Frederick Post Company branding, the set is likely from before 1972, when the company became Teledyne Post.Components:The set appears to include various compasses, ruling pens, and attachments for different drawing tasks
