Saltmarche was a prominent artist and art gallery director, particularly known for his contributions to the Windsor art scene. Born on September 29, 1920, in Cardiff, Wales, he moved to Windsor, Ontario, with his parents in 1924. Saltmarche studied art at the Cass Technical Institute in Detroit and the Ontario College of Art in Toronto. He was a key figure in developing the collection of the Art Gallery of Windsor, where he served as curator and later director. Saltmarche was well-known for his portraiture, including his famous image of Reverend E.C. LeBel, the University of Windsor's firstpresident. He was instrumental in transforming the Art Gallery of Windsor into a leading regional institution. His dedication to the arts and his community involvement left a lasting legacy.
