A Royal Canadian Mint specimen set from 2016, including COA - only 30,000 minted.

The one-dollar coin in the 2016 specimen set of Canadian coins features a reverse image by Canadian artist Glen Scrimshaw. Beautifully depicted in its natural setting, the tundra swan is particularly resplendent with features that are brought to life through finely detailed engraving and the unique combination of finishes. As with all Canadian "loonies,"this coin features an 11-sided shape and raised edging.

No other mint in the world issues coins with a specimen finish that combines brilliant and frosted relief on a lined background. It's a highly collectible feature that is bolstered by yet anotherthe unique tundra swan design on this set's loonie!

DYK: One of only two native swan species, Canada's tundra swan (Cygnus columbianus) is the very picture of elegance with its snowy white plumage and long, slender neck. This large waterfowl is a graceful summer resident of the Arctic region, where pairs establish nests on the tundra and near the lakes and waterways that are a rich source of food. Come September, these birds gather in large flocks for an annual migration that sends them flying over many parts of Canada, on a journey south to coastal areas that will provide them refuge from the winter's cold. The tundra swan was formally known as a "whistling swan" but not because it was actually able to whistleit earned the moniker from the sound made by its wings while in flight.Their white plumage can take on a reddish tinge in areas that are iron-rich.Young swans begin their courtship in late winter and will "date" for a year before they actually breed; this strong bond is likely to last throughout their lives.Pairs affirm their bond with "victory" displays: facing one another, they slowly flap their wings while stretching their neck, keeping their heads bowed as they vocalize their pairing through a duet. It's easy to mistake a trumpeter swan for a tundra swan, and vice-versa. The two species look very similar but sound different: while the trumpeter has a deep, trumpet-like voice (hence the name), the tundra swan has more melodious vocals.
