Lot #6: Copper over Steel 4-chain Chatelaine

The chatelaine was designed to keep useful tools close at hand--ranging from sewing to personal care--and intended to be clipped to a belt, since women's clothing rarely included pockets, while the long chains allowed tools to be used without unclipping them. Popular from the 17th - early 20th centuries, with earlier examples as far back as ancient Rome. This gorgeously detailed example is copper over steel. A single chain hangs from the belt hook, with four separate chains hanging from a central loop. These chains each have a spring-ring clasp to attach the accessories: a comb case, a perfume bottle with glass dabber, a mirrored powder compact with original puff, and a compact with two mirrors, one significantly de-silvered.
