Lot #65: Lady Duff-Gordon Sears Roebuck Catalog

Lady Duff-Gordon, aka Lucile, was a pioneer in the making and especially the selling of women's fashion. She was the first designer to stage runway shows, with crossover work for film and stage costumes. Her clothes were somewhat racy for the time, and also aspirational and very much of-the-moment, and her personality was as much a selling point as her designs: she was an astute businesswoman, Titanic survivor, and mingled with the celebrities of the day. In 1916 she partnered with Sears, Roebuck and Co. to produce ready to wear clothing via mail order. This issue, from 1917, titled "Wearing Apparel for the Women of America," features day and evening wear, fetchingly modeled and titled with names such as "Chaperone," "Marcella," and "My Dearest." Each is shown on a model in a black and white photo image, with a lengthy description. The loose envelope for placing an order is still included. Full-color cover and center foldout, otherwise 2-color printing.  Slight areas of wear to covers; interior pages very good.
