The Large Jewelry Lot

&nbsp;This elegant burlwood etui has all its original tools, which are indicated by our client as 14K, though we were unable to find stamps indicating this, or to decipher the hallmarks. However, compulsory stamps to indicate carat weight were not in place until the 1920s, and this etui likely dates to the early-mid 1800s. The case is inlaid on the front cover with a small monogrammed silver and ebony cartouche, and ebony floral corners within double borders. The back has a single ebony border. Push button hinged cover opens to the cream-colored velvet interior, with fitted spots for each tool, defined by a board outline. Includes needle case, punch, bodkin, scissors, and a t<span style="font-size: 1rem;">himble, all in excellent condition. 14K Gold French Etui

Assorted Jewelry &#38; Sewing Novelties , most Sterling  w/Vitrine

Mother of pearl, also known as nacre, has long been used for decorative inlay into furniture, religious and decorative objects, as cutlery handles, and as handles for small tools. It became especially popular in the mid-1800s, as the Victorian love of natural materials and ornamentation prevailed. This collection of antique sewing items is highlighted by the c.1810 French necessaire, a small sewing kit that would have been part of any well-to-do woman's arsenal. This one is complete, from the Palais Royal shops situated in arcades built by Louis Phillipe II, the Duke of Orleans--a luxury shopping destination from the 1780s through the mid-1800s. Housed in a gilt-stamped red leather case with a mirror under the lid, each item rests in a specially fitted spot, all with silk-covered board surrounds, in pale mushroom velvet. Two thread winders, a needle case with gold banding and small enamel inset flower, bodkin, punch, thimble with gold banding, steel scissors with gold and fish-motif mother of pearl handles. Tools are in fine condition; gold is likely 18K; case shows slight wear commensurate with age and use. We were unable to find carat weight marks, but these were not compulsory until the 1920s. We've also included a variety of small items, a few in abalone: thread winders; picks; cutting tools; shuttles for tatting; a set of earrings and pin, c. 1910; a school of fantastically delicate fish that serve as thread winders, from China, c. 1890; and coin shaped winders, same. The Singer 221 Featherweight machine was first displayed at the 1933 World's Fair, held in Chicago. The serial number dates this machine to 1957. The Darners Lot featuring &#34;End of the Day&#34; Spatter Art 

An extensive array of shoes that would do Imelda Marcos proud! According to Ms. Thompson, the original collector of our entire auction inventory, the shoe lot here is representative of functional and fashionable styles from 1840 to 1940 and includes work shoes, dress shoes, and a boot or two, hand carved and molded. Small models of ladies' dress shoes, historic and contemporary, are being reproduced.<div>Pincushions, a nickel plate over brass boot (3 feet in 1 - get it?) tape measure, thimble holders and footware in steel, pewter, lead, wood, glass, and porcelain are all represented here, as are many origins, from Turkey, England, and Holland to a souvenir bootie from the Chicago World's Fair of 1893.&nbsp;Many pincushions were ornamental as well as functional in Victorian Depression era homes. SHOES! with Vitrine

A sweet collection of thimble holders in a variety of materials, all mid- to late-1800s. The brass walnut is stamped W. Avery &amp; Son. Redditch, plus hallmark, on the underside of the hinged lid, and contains a single black safety pin, identified as a mourning pin, from an era when mourning meant head to toe black, in all things. A quartet of tagua nut holders with screw tops is extensively carved, and in excellent condition. A small wooden column is ebonized and topped with a blue pincushion, with a floral decal on one side. Tape-measures and Pincushions

The chatelaine was designed to keep useful tools close at hand--ranging from sewing to personal care--and intended to be clipped to a belt, since women's clothing rarely included pockets, while the long chains allowed tools to be used without unclipping them. Popular from the 17th - early 20th centuries, with earlier examples as far back as ancient Rome. This gorgeously detailed example is copper over steel. A single chain hangs from the belt hook, with four separate chains hanging from a central loop. Beautiful scissors were exported throughout Europe from manufacturing towns in Italy. They were well known for quality of work-manship. Again there is reference to the Eastern influence that established strong centers of steel manufacturing in Italy and Spain during the Moors' occupation of these countries. Jewelers made beautiful scissors for those who were wealthy and the ruling class.</span><div>Utilitarian scissors made of brass and iron were used by the working class. Since the Victorian period, it is not uncommon for the blades to be manufactured in Germany or England and the handles added by the manufacturers in a different country. What's bog oak? Just what it sounds like: wood that has been preserved in a bog. The tannic acid in the bog turns the wood very dark, and the minerals render it partially fossilized and extremely dense, not to mention rare. Most commonly from England and Ireland, where peat bogs are found. Here we have a thread holder fashioned as a barrel on stand, with thread being dispensed through the "spout," Ireland, c. 1875. A bog oak sewing clamp, England, c. 1860, holds several slender spools and has bovine material eyelets for thread dispending, missing its top half. &nbsp;And several pieces that escaped the bog and simply came from felled trees, including a peach velvet pincushion set into a wooden stand, possibly walnut, with an intriguing free-moving wooden ring around the base, Ohio, c. 1920; a small box, likely maple, with a velvet pincushion on top and a single drawer stocked with old buttons; and a nifty tape measure in a turned finial-shape stand, hailing from New Zealand, with an abalone inset in the top.
