Lot #74: Vintage Sewing Kits

All different, these sewing kits span time periods and origins, from Europe and the US.  A black painted wooden box with gold cartouche and pin-striping is velvet lined, with a mirror under the lid, holds various tools, with what appear to be missing bodkin and punch; a girl's travel kit in embossed leather has a metal clasp and red silk lined interior, with a variety of metal, celluloid, and bovine material tools, plus a mirror and a small booklet with gilt edged pages, no entries; a French souvenir shell box, lined with felt and stocked with needles, thread and scissors; a metal box with bail handle, painted black and decorated with gold and red linear borders, from Brook's of Meltham Mills, England, c.1890, holds bodkins, tatting shuttle, and a wonderful tasseled and enameled thimble case; and, also from England, a striped child's companion sewing kit, leather strips over wool, c. 1860, has metal clasp, leather straps and hinges for top, and few small tools, including a celluloid tambour embroidery hook from Diadem, used to punch through the material being embroidered and catch thread to pull through, so that the work takes places on the back of the fabric and thus presents a smooth surface for the front of the piece,  patented 1915.
