Lot #76: Souvenirs from Other Lands

Sewing-related souvenirs and smalls, from around the globe, include a lidded brass Chinese iron, c. 1900, meant to hold hot coals that would heat the smooth bottom surface. Decorated with brass applique and inset dark red stones, possibly red jade. Two are missing, as shown; some loss of patina in spots. Small brass box with hinged handle with lid, inset turquiose and carnelian stones. Inlaid and painted small round wooden boxes, all with lids, approximately. 2.5"D. Three lusterware figures from 1920s Japan--the stork and the donkey (3.5"W X 4.25"H) are pincushions, the little boy perhaps held tiny pencils. Two celluloid fish from Japan, c. 1920. Wooden needle case from Germany, 4"H, and wooden perfume case with glass liner from France, and 4 tiny Frozen Charlotte dolls, each about 1"H. These tiny bisque pieces were produced 1850-1920, and were named after the heroine of a folk ballad about a young woman who met her end from the cold while on a carriage ride. More cheerfully, they were hidden in cakes and said to bring good luck to whoever found them.   A tartan coin keeper from Scotland; a Sterling pill box from the Netherlands with a blue and white porcelain lid; a bronze pin from the Middle east, 14th-16th century; and a little celluloid man whose hat unscrews to release a tiny pair of dice, no more than 1/4"D each.
