Nuu-chah-nulth Hand Carved Box witha Wolf Emblem The Wolf Symbol represents loyalty,strong family ties, good communication,education, understanding, andintelligence. Of all land animals, the Wolfhas the strongest supernatural powersand is the most accomplished hunter. The box is made of yellow cedar withangled joints, and 45 degree angles cutinto the sides. The lid fits tightly. Theinside is lined with a light cream-greenvelvet. The base is made with amasonite panel. The wolf head is deeply carved, andpainted in the traditional red, black, andwhite. The shape of the nose is typical ofthe Nuu-chah-nulth carvers. While this piece is signed on the basewith the initials DAC, I have not beenable to find out the carvers name. These ocarinas are known as a "whistleof death" because historians believe theywere used to help guide sacrificialvictims on their journey to the afterlife,the sacrifice of a human life was theultimate offering of blood to the gods,and the most important Maya ritualsculminated in human sacrifice. This is a hand formed head, half thepiece is "living" human, the other half askull for "death". The potter has usediron oxide (red), and manganese (white),and the grey results from burnishing theclay and firing in a wood pit kiln. Art Nouveau "Flemish" Glove Box A hand made box from the Flemish Art Co. of Brooklyn, New York, dated 1911 to 1915. The Flemish Art Co. was known for their pyrographic design, so this piece is very unusual because it was painted. There are violets and twinning leaves in shades of green and purples. The lid and three sides contain these decorations, and the back side is blank. The inside of the lis has a lime green silk liner that shows some wear, and the interior walls and the frame of the lid are decorated with a dot pattern. There are two brass hinges with four cotter pins, and a decorative brass latch that works well. In good condition for the age, a little wear on the edges and corners. Center features a detailed Breton woman in classic regional attire holding flowers, surrounded by green plants and flying birds. The rim is decorated with vibrant red, blue, and green stylized leaves and fins along the edges and tail. Mouth of fish includes painted facial features with orange and black accents. Small glaze chip on the fish eye, otherwise excellent.
