Beautifully preserved, matching four-volume collection of Latvian short stories and memoirs by the celebrated author Jānis Akuraters. Published between 1968 and 1972 by the historic emigré publishing house Tilts (Tilta Apgāds) based in Minneapolis, Minnesota, this collection represents an important piece of Latvian diaspora cultural preservation. The set contains distinct, hardbound volumes completely written in their original Latvian language: • Atspīdumi: Stāsti un atmiņas (1968) – A reflective collection of stories and memories. • Aiz laika straumes: Stāsti (1970) – A compiling of classic narrative short stories. • Klusums un gaisma: Stāsti (1972) – Short story compositions focusing on themes of quietude and light. • Kalēja dēls: Stāsti (1972) – Features a stunning mid-century modern illustrated dust jacket designed by Ojārs Jēgens. • The Author (Jānis Akuraters): A pillar of Latvian literature, Akuraters (1876–1937) was not only a renowned romanticist poet and playwright but a foundational political figure who co-signed Latvia’s declaration of independence in 1918 and founded the Latvian National Theatre. • The Publisher (Tilts): Following the Soviet occupation of Latvia during WWII, hundreds of thousands of Latvians fled abroad. Tilts Apgāds became one of the premier exile publishing houses in North America. They printed high-quality books in the Latvian language to ensure that diaspora families could preserve their heritage and literary identity while separated from their homeland. • Language Value: Because these books were printed entirely in Latvian outside the Soviet Union, they bypassed state censorship of the era. They were printed in limited numbers exclusively for the global emigré community, making clean, cohesive multi-volume sets quite rare today. • Dust Jacket Artist: The dust jacket for Kalēja dēls explicitly credits Ojārs Jēgens (a noted Latvian exile poet and graphic artist). His distinctive mid-century modernist cover aesthetics are highly sought after by collectors of vintage graphic design. Pickup category timeslot {A}
