Rare piece of post-World War II European and Baltic history: a 1948 first edition copy of the Latvian novel Mīlestības zīmogs (The Seal of Love) by noted author Knuts Lesiņš. Published by Jānis Kadilis (J. Kadiļa apgāds), this paperback volume is a prime example of Latvian "Exile Literature" (trimdas literatūra) produced by displaced persons shortly after the war. • Author: Knuts Lesiņš • Title: Mīlestības zīmogs (Romāns) • Publisher: J. Kadiļa apgāds • Year: 1948 • Printer: Gg. Hauser, Metzingen (Württemberg, Germany) • Cover Artist: Sigismunds Vidbergs • Language: Latvian • Format: Softcover / Paperback • The Historical Context (Trimda Literature): Following the Soviet occupation of the Baltic states, tens of thousands of Latvian intellectuals, artists, and writers fled to Western Europe. They settled temporarily in Displaced Persons (DP) camps across Germany. Despite severe paper shortages and strict printing regulations, these communities established a vibrant literary culture to preserve their national identity. • The French Zone Imprint & Censorship Visa: The third image shows a highly collectible administrative mark: G.M.Z.F.O. Visa No. 5090 ONZA. This stands for the Gouvernement Militaire de la Zone Française d'Occupation (Military Government of the French Zone of Occupation). Because the book was printed in Metzingen (under French administrative control), it required official clearance from the Direction de la Direction de l'Éducation Publique and the Direction de l'Information. Finding these explicit post-war military censorship stamps intact adds tremendous historical provenance. • The Publisher (Jānis Kadilis): Kadilis was one of the most prominent publishers of the exile community in Germany before later migrating to the United States. His publications are highly sought after by Baltic historians for their cultural significance and limited production runs. • The Cover Illustrator (Sigismunds Vidbergs): The internal credits note Vāku zīmējis S. Vidbergs. Sigismunds Vidbergs was a legendary Latvian graphic artist and painter famous for his intricate, elegant pen-and-ink drawings and Art Deco style. His cover art alone makes this an attractive crossover piece for art collectors. Pickup category timeslot {A}
