Title: Pēdējās dienas Kurzemē: Atmiņas un stāsti (The Last Days in Courland: Memories and Stories) Author: Jānis Sudrabiņš Illustrator / Cover Artist: Alfreds Jaunzems Publisher: Tilta Apgāds (Minneapolis) Year of Publication: 1969 Language: Latvian Format: Hardcover / Softcover with original illustrated dust jacket or cover art Synopsis & Historical Scope: This scarce volume features a collection of deeply personal memoirs, accounts, and short stories capturing life in the "Courland Pocket" (Kurzeme) during the final, chaotic months of World War II. Written from the perspective of Latvian citizens and soldiers trapped in the region, the text provides a poignant, ground-level view of wartime survival, rural resilience, and the geopolitical tragedy of the era. The book features evocative, stylized interior illustrations and cover design by acclaimed artist Alfreds Jaunzems. Collector’s Notes of Interest: • Language & Diaspora Context: Written and published entirely in the Latvian language. Following Soviet re-occupation, authentic national narratives regarding the Courland Pocket were heavily censored or rewritten within Latvia itself. This book represents a vital piece of Trimdas literatūra (exile/diaspora literature), keeping uncensored history alive. • The Publisher (Tilta Apgāds): Based out of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Tilta Apgāds was one of the premier post-war Latvian emigré publishing houses. They served a tightly-knit global network of refugees, meaning print runs for these editions were incredibly small, highly localized, and rarely preserved in top condition. • The Author: Jānis Sudrabiņš’s first-hand perspective offers historians and cultural collectors an authentic look into the psychological and physical realities faced by Latvians caught between two totalitarian regimes.
