Vintage 1965 Latvian edition of Émile Zola's classic novel, Abata Murē noziegums (originally La Faute de l'Abbé Mouret / The Sin of Father Mouret). Translated into Latvian by Jānis Veselis, this edition features a striking green hardcover with stylized gold-stamped foil art on both the cover and the spine. • The Publisher (Tilta Apgāds): This book holds unique value for collectors of twentieth-century European diaspora and emigration history. Tilta Apgāds ("Bridge Publishing") was a highly notable Latvian exile press active outside of Latvia during the Soviet occupation. Following World War II, thousands of Latvian intellectuals, writers, and artists fled to Western Europe and the Americas, forming vibrant "Displaced Persons" (DP) and immigrant communities. Exile presses like Tilta preserved Latvian culture, free speech, and high literature by publishing forbidden classics and original works completely free of Soviet censorship. • The Author (Émile Zola): Émile Zola (1840–1902) remains one of France's most globally influential novelists and the leading figure of the literary school of Naturalism. Abata Murē noziegums belongs to his monumental 20-volume Les Rougon-Macquart cycle, detailing a priest's emotional and psychological struggle against church expectations, deeply isolated in a remote French commune. • The Language & Translation: This translation is rendered in pure pre-Soviet or traditional exile Latvian orthography, preserving the literary voice of independent interwar Latvia. It was translated by Jānis Veselis, himself a prominent Latvian writer, poet, and cultural figure who fled into exile after WWII, making this volume a collaboration between two historic literary voices.
