Lot #154: 19th-Century European Folk Art Ebonized Cabinet with High-Relief Vine Carvings and Hand-Painted Floral Panels

An exceptional and highly unique 19th-century regional European folk art side cabinet or credenza. This striking piece features a heavily ebonized finish, adorned with remarkably dense, deep high-relief wood carvings of sprawling grapevines, leaves, and abundant grape clusters framing the entire front facade. The two doors are inset with prominent oval medallions showcasing vibrant, hand-painted polychrome floral bouquets featuring roses and mixed botanicals against a dark lacquer background. The panels are constructed using a period composition/mache backing inset into a solid wood frame. The interior opens to reveal an unpainted, natural wood double-tier storage space split by a single full-width shelf. Built with traditional regional craftsmanship, the cabinet retains its wide vertical plank backboard construction and an early iron interior latch hook. A wonderful statement piece for collectors of primitive folk art, Black Forest aesthetics, or Victorian-era furnishings. Condition Report • Overall: Fair to Good antique condition, presenting an honest, untouched structural state. • Finish: Notable and active flaking, chipping, and lifting to the brittle black gesso/lacquer finish along the exterior moldings and front left corner column, exposing the lighter natural wood and structural composition layer underneath. • Structure: Cabinet frame, doors, and interior shelf remain structurally sound and stable. Wood shows typical age-related wear, minor scuffs, and surface oxidation consistent with age and utilitarian use. • Hardware: Retains early internal iron latch. No exterior key included.
