Lot #56: Japanese Style Miniature Carvings - Netsuke & Okimono Figurines with Pagoda

detailed miniature carvings executed in traditional Japanese styles, including figurative katabori netsuke, a multi-tiered miniature pagoda tower, and stylized elder groupings. These pieces beautifully capture the essence of Japanese folklore and traditional dress, featuring fine cross-hatching, ink-stained accents, and deep patinas. Netsuke originated during the Edo Period (1603–1867) as functional, miniature sculptural toggles. Because traditional Japanese kimonos lacked pockets, men used cords to hang small containers (inro) from their sashes (obi), utilizing a netsuke at the top as a stabilizing counterweight. Over time, these grew from utilitarian toggles into highly expressive miniature art forms. After Western clothing replaced kimonos during the Meiji era, the craft transitioned into decorative miniature sculptures (okimono) highly sought after by international collectors Pickup category timeslot {A}
