Danny Dennis (1951–2012) was a talented self-taught Gitxsan First Nations artist from British Columbia, with Tsimshian heritage. Born in Port Essington and raised primarily in the Hazelton area, Dennis began his professional artistic career in 1978. He became recognized for his distinctive interpretations of traditional Northwest Coast Indigenous art, working in a variety of mediums including painting, printmaking, carving and jewellery. Inspired by renowned artists Robert Davidson and Francis Williams, Dennis developed a style characterized by flowing lines, striking forms and powerful imagery. His work was exhibited in galleries throughout Canada and internationally, including Germany. These two striking works by Gitxsan artist Danny Dennis beautifully showcase his distinctive interpretation of Northwest Coast Indigenous art. Using traditional formline elements, flowing shapes and carefully balanced compositions, Dennis brings cultural imagery to life through a sophisticated palette of black, terracotta red, teal and white. His designs are both bold and graceful, demonstrating a wonderful sense of movement, symmetry and visual storytelling. Frogs and Bear celebrate the natural world through two significant animal forms found in Northwest Coast artistic traditions. The intricate details, expressive shapes and contrasting colours give each composition its own personality while creating a lovely visual relationship between the two pieces. Together, they make a particularly appealing pair for collectors of Canadian Indigenous art and admirers of contemporary Northwest Coast design. Pickup category timeslot {A}
