beautifully preserved piece of literary history: a vintage Remington Remette Portable Manual Typewriter, manufactured circa late 1930s to early 1940s. Proudly stamped as a "British Empire Product" and manufactured by Remington Rand in Canada, this compact machine perfectly encapsulates the iconic industrial design of the pre-war era. Historical Significance: Introduced by the Remington Rand Corporation in 1938, the "Remette" was specifically designed to be a lightweight, no-nonsense budget portable machine during the tail-end of the Great Depression. Stripped of complex mechanics like a bell or tabulator to make it affordable and exceptionally reliable, it became a massive favorite for students, mobile journalists, and traveling writers who needed an "on-the-go" writing companion. Key Features & Condition: • Aesthetics: Finished in a striking matte black textured crinkle finish with classic glass-topped keys. • Portability: Comes complete with its original textured black wood/fiberboard hard shell carrying case featuring its original leather handle. • Functionality: Features a standard QWERTY keyboard layout. Untested The most notable figure linked to this exact typewriter model is Ian Fleming, the creator of James Bond. • During World War II, Fleming served in Britain’s Naval Intelligence Division. He owned and operated a Canadian-built Remington Remette during the war years. • He eventually gifted this exact typewriter to a British MI6 secret agent named Prudence Mason to encourage her to write her wartime memoirs. Her husband was an operative whose dangerous real-life exploits heavily inspired Fleming's early concepts for James Bond. • Collector Note: Fleming's personal Remette typewriter is actively preserved and displayed at the International Spy Museum in Washington, D.C. TV prop uses: • Period-Accurate Journalist & Military Sets: Because the Remette was famously manufactured between 1938 and 1941, prop masters frequently use it in television shows and films set during World War II or the late Great Depression. • The "On-the-Move" Prop: Whenever a television character is supposed to be a foreign war correspondent, a traveling author, or a military clerk operating out of a temporary tent, the Remette is frequently used because its flat, compact profile and integrated bottom shell allowed characters to type directly from their laps or small military crates.
