magnificent piece of Canadian-localized industrial history: an authentic Underwood Standard No. 5 desktop typewriter. This specific machine features a beautiful, highly collectible original dealer decal on the front left panel from the Herb Blake Typewriter Co. of Hamilton, Ontario. It retains its legendary open-frame cast-iron body, gold accent pinstriping, and individual glass-inset keys with polished metal rims.
Included in this auction is a fascinating assortment of six vintage typewriter ribbon containers and tins, showcasing iconic regional advertising and mid-century typography:
• Three (3) Caribonum "Red-Box" Typewriter Ribbon Tins: Striking deep red lithographed metal tins with white script.
• One (1) IBM Ribbon Box: Classic retro tri-color text cardboard box.
• One (1) Beaver Brand Ribbon Box: A wonderfully preserved early cardstock box featuring its distinct beaver logo graphic.

Untested

• Local Canadian Provenance: The Herb Blake Typewriter Co. was a legendary fixture in downtown Hamilton, Ontario (located on John Street North) active from the 1940s through the 1960s. Original dealer decals add significant localized charm and make the typewriter highly desirable to Ontario history buffs, regional antique collectors, and Canadian prop houses (frequently sourced for regional productions like Murdoch Mysteries).
• The "Budge" Montreal Ribbon Tin: The round teal tin from the Budge Carbon Paper Mfg. Co. Ltd. of Montreal adds an extra layer of Canadian typographic history to the ephemera lot, appealing directly to specialized tin collectors ("tologists").
• The Revolutionary "Visible" Writing Machine: Introduced around the turn of the century, the Underwood No. 5 changed writing forever. It was the first immensely successful typewriter that allowed typists to see what they were typing as they pressed the keys, establishing the universal desktop layout used for the next 60 years.

Tv prop usefulness:

Because the Underwood No. 5 was the dominant office machine of its era, it was the tool of choice for many legendary 20th-century creators:
• Ernest Hemingway: Famously used an Underwood Standard to write many of his classic works and letters.
• F. Scott Fitzgerald & William Faulkner: Both iconic authors draft-wrote early prose on Underwood desktops.
• Andy Rooney: The legendary 60 Minutes television journalist wrote his segments on his beloved 1920s Underwood No. 5 for decades, famously refusing to switch to a computer.
• Jack Kerouac & William S. Burroughs: Beat Generation figures heavily favored Underwood machines; Burroughs specifically used an Underwood No. 5.
• Arthur Conan Doyle: The creator of Sherlock Holmes was a documented user of the Underwood 5
• Parks and Recreation: In a famous comedic bit, the character Ron Swanson happily finds, cleans, and restores a vintage Underwood No. 5 to bypass modern office technology.
• House of Cards: The Underwood brand is explicitly integrated into the plot. The main character, Frank Underwood, uses a vintage Underwood typewriter to type a pivotal letter to the President, joking about a fictional family tie to the company fortune.
Classic Hollywood Film Noir: The machine is the quintessential newsroom and detective office prop, notably featured as the "workhorse" typewriter in classic movies like Meet John Doe and Hold Back the Dawn.

beautifully preserved Underwood Standard Four-Bank Portable Typewriter dating from the golden era of manual typography (circa late 1920s to 1930s). Finished in a classic glossy black enamel with stunning nickel-rimmed glass keys, this iconic machine represents a monumental leap in typewriter design history. It comes paired with its original hard-sided, fabric-wrapped carrying case.
Brand History & Significance
Established in 1895 by John T. Underwood, the Underwood Typewriter Company came to define the industry, famously manufacturing the legendary Underwood No. 5—the machine that set the standard for all modern typewriters. Underwood machines were the choice tools of legendary figures, including Ernest Hemingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald, and Jack Kerouac.
The "Standard Four-Bank Portable" model was a technological triumph for the company. Prior portable typewriters relied on a limiting 3-bank layout that forced users to awkwardly double-shift for numbers and punctuation. The 4-bank system brought the full efficiency of a heavy-duty office desktop typewriter into a compact, portable frame, making it an overnight success among journalists, writers, and travelers of the roaring twenties.
Key Selling Points for Buyers:
• Four-Bank QWERTY Keyboard: Offers a completely standard typing layout featuring intact, elegant circular glass-topped keys.
• Exceptional Aesthetic Appeal: The striking high-gloss black finish accompanied by crisp gold decals makes it a perfect industrial centerpiece for home decor, studios, or office displays.
• Original Carrying Travel Case: Features its original hardshell storage box with latch hardware, a rare survivor that protects the machine's mechanics.
• Mechanical Features: Built out with vintage manual controls including dual ribbon spools, margin release, and color selectors.

Untested

The hand-written serial number on the label reads 545960.
According to The Typewriter Database, Underwood 4-Bank Portables with serial numbers between 536,035 and 582,608 were manufactured precisely in 1931.
**Rare Original Ephemera Included:**
A remarkable feature of this listing is the original paper "Warranty Certificate" label safely intact on the inside of the case lid. It clearly displays the matching factory serial number: 545960. Finding these fragile paper labels preserved in this condition is highly uncommon and adds immense historical and collectible value to the set.

Pop culture and tv prop usefulness:

• Orson Welles: The brilliant filmmaker, actor, and director famously used an exact Underwood 4-Bank Portable typewriter during the 1930s and 1940s. Welles typed on his while crafting the iconic Mercury Theatre radio scripts (potentially including the infamous 1938 War of the Worlds broadcast) and working on his cinematic masterpiece, Citizen Kane. His personal unit is currently preserved at the Smithsonian National Museum of American History.
• F. Scott Fitzgerald: The quintessential author of the Jazz Age relied heavily on the Underwood Portable throughout the 1920s. He notoriously typed out drafts of The Great Gatsby on an early Underwood portable model.
• Ernest Hemingway: While Hemingway owned several typewriters throughout his lifetime (including Corona and Royal models), he was an avid user and prominent fan of the Underwood Portable. He utilized his portable for writing and taking notes while traveling across Europe and Cuba.
• Lady Gaga: In contemporary pop culture, Lady Gaga is a well-known collector of antique writing tools and keeps an Underwood portable prominently in her creative workspace.

beautifully preserved piece of literary history: a vintage Remington Remette Portable Manual Typewriter, manufactured circa late 1930s to early 1940s. Proudly stamped as a "British Empire Product" and manufactured by Remington Rand in Canada, this compact machine perfectly encapsulates the iconic industrial design of the pre-war era.
Historical Significance:
Introduced by the Remington Rand Corporation in 1938, the "Remette" was specifically designed to be a lightweight, no-nonsense budget portable machine during the tail-end of the Great Depression. Stripped of complex mechanics like a bell or tabulator to make it affordable and exceptionally reliable, it became a massive favorite for students, mobile journalists, and traveling writers who needed an "on-the-go" writing companion.
Key Features & Condition:
• Aesthetics: Finished in a striking matte black textured crinkle finish with classic glass-topped keys.
• Portability: Comes complete with its original textured black wood/fiberboard hard shell carrying case featuring its original leather handle.
• Functionality: Features a standard QWERTY keyboard layout.

Untested

The most notable figure linked to this exact typewriter model is Ian Fleming, the creator of James Bond.
• During World War II, Fleming served in Britain’s Naval Intelligence Division. He owned and operated a Canadian-built Remington Remette during the war years.
• He eventually gifted this exact typewriter to a British MI6 secret agent named Prudence Mason to encourage her to write her wartime memoirs. Her husband was an operative whose dangerous real-life exploits heavily inspired Fleming's early concepts for James Bond.
• Collector Note: Fleming's personal Remette typewriter is actively preserved and displayed at the International Spy Museum in Washington, D.C.

TV prop uses:
• Period-Accurate Journalist & Military Sets: Because the Remette was famously manufactured between 1938 and 1941, prop masters frequently use it in television shows and films set during World War II or the late Great Depression.
• The "On-the-Move" Prop: Whenever a television character is supposed to be a foreign war correspondent, a traveling author, or a military clerk operating out of a temporary tent, the Remette is frequently used because its flat, compact profile and integrated bottom shell allowed characters to type directly from their laps or small military crates.

Built during a transitional era where solid-state was designed to emulate the warm acoustic richness of vanishing vacuum tube gear, Pioneer spared no expense on its heavy chassis, low-noise silicon transistors, and premium FET circuitry.
