Sturtevant J Hamblin (American artist 1817-1884) Baby with Doll c 1850 (Prior-Hamblin School)Sturtevant worked with his brothers Eli, Joseph, Nathaniel, & their sister Rosamond, wife of artist William Matthew Prior. When Rosamond married Prior, the Hamblins & the Priors joined forces creating a family art business. Their art styles, as well as many other New England folk artists of that era, are very similar and nearly indistinguishable. Today, most unsigned paintings done in this style are commonly referred to as the Prior-Hamblin School. There seem to be only 7 known signed portraits by Sturtevant Hamblen. Sturtevant was listed as a portrait painter in Boston until 1856, when he & his brother Joseph went into the mens furnishings business.William Matthew Prior (May 16, 1806 January 21, 1873) was an American folk artist known for his portraits, particularly of families and children. In 1840, Prior moved to East Boston, Massachusetts from his native Bath with his in-laws, notably fellow painter Sturtevant J. Hamblin, to invigorate his career as an artist.[2] The paintings of Prior and Hamblin, when unsigned, are so similar in style as to be indistinguishable, and are commonly attributed to the "Prior/Hamblin School".[3] According to the 1852 directory of Boston, Prior lived at 36 Trenton Street in East Boston.[4] Come to pickup at Category B time-slot.
